IBM has come up with a slick desktop as good as ThinkPad
Article Abstract:
IBM's new desktop computer, the NetVista x40i, is stylish and compact, as well as powerful and fast. The low-end $1,799 model was tested. It has a Celeron processor running at 533 megahertz, 64 gigbytes of memory and a 10-gigbyte hard disk. Its best feature is the keyboard, with large keys that work smoothly and feel great. The downsides are that the jacks for the modem and Ethernet are hard to get to, the audio speakers are only adequate, and there is no internal CD-RW drive to record on blank CDs. In sum, this is a fine computer that looks good and works well, fits nicely on your desk, and represents a strong turnaround for IBM in its desktop PCs.

Apple's design delight: the Cube is beautiful, silent and powerful
Article Abstract:
The new apple Power Mac G4 Cube performs very well, and can be recommended to new users, Mac fans or to Windows users. The only drawbacks are that it does not include any removable disk on which one can write data. The Cube lacks a floppy dirve and a CD-RW drive for writing on blanks. The only other drawback is the price, $1,799 for the base model, which has only 64 megabytes of memory.

Two Apple products arrive for the holidays, but only one delivers
Article Abstract:
The Apple iMac DV Special Edition sells for $1,500. The system includes a FireWire connection and excels at editing home videos. The AirPort wireless network was less user-friendly. It took over an hour to configure the base station to connect to the Internet. Computers hooked into the network could share information among themselves without a problem.
