Apple's fiscal 2nd-quarter net income rises sharply but is below expectations
Article Abstract:
Apple reported that its net income for its 2nd qtr, which ended Mar 31, 1995, rose significantly to $73 million or 53 cents per share on strong unit sales, but the income increase was lower than analysts expected. Analysts had estimated that the computer maker's income would increase to 93 cents per share for the quarter. Apple blamed the shortfall on currency hedging problems caused by the weak dollar, but it noted that these difficulties were accounting problems that could be corrected later. The company's Japanese sales reached $500 million in the quarter. Apple's unit sales increased about 20% during the quarter, but that rise mirrored the industry as whole. Most observers believe that Apple must increase its sales faster than the industry to gain market share from Intel-based PCs. Apple reported that it does not intend to lower its prices on its higher-end Power Macintosh models.

Sequent Computer says 'private' lines hurt profitability
Article Abstract:
Sequent Computer Systems Inc says it may not become profitable in 1991 because it is still trying to get out of the private-label business. The computer maker will probably post a loss for the 3rd qtr of 1991 but may be able to turn a profit by the 4th qtr of 1991. Sequent reported earnings of $5.9 million, or 25 cents a share, for the 3rd qtr of 1990 and $2.6 million, or 11 cents a share, for the 4th qtr of 1990. The company's revenue for 1990 was $248.8 million. Sequent says that it will leave the private-label business but will service its current contracts. The company will report a $7.6 million charge and an eight percent reduction of its 1,600-employee workforce as part of its restructuring.

Article Abstract:
Tandem Computers Inc reports that it expects to post higher revenue and earnings for its fiscal 4th qtr ended Sept 30, 1989, while preparing to compete with IBM in the mainframe business.
