As long as you use tons of paper, buy a good printer
Article Abstract:
Epson's $279 Epson Stylus Photo 700 and HP's $299 HP DeskJet 722C color ink jet printers, as well as HP's $399 HP Model 380 multifunction printer are evaluated. The Photo 700 continued a company problem in printing normal text documents on plain paper, despite its excellence when operating Epson's own 'photo-quality' ink-jet paper and adjusted printer software. Memos, letterheads and spreadsheets lack crispness, boldness and clarity. More versatility can be achieved with the HP DeskJet 722C, which does an overall great job in printing text, graphics or photos on plain and inexpensive paper. The DeskJet is slower than Photo 700 in printing graphics and photos, as well as somewhat less in graphic output quality. HP 380, targeted to home and small-office PC users, outperforms Epson in print quality on cheap paper but falls short of the DeskJet 722C. Quality duplicating and scanning make HP 380 a reasonable alternative for users who seek a versatile printer that lacks a fax machine.

The CrossPad sends paper-and-ink notes to your PC screen
Article Abstract:
A.T. Cross' $399 CrossPad is an innovative electronic clipboard that bridges the gap between paper and computer. It holds standard paper pads where users can take notes on but stores those notes in digital form as they are being written. The electronic notes can then be uploaded on a standard Pentium PC, viewed as images of users' handwriting and converted to editable digital text. CrossPad is very portable and comes with a special Cross pen that functions like a regular ballpoint pen but contains a radio transmitter that beams pen strokes to the electronic clipboard. Installing the Ink Manager IBM-supplied software is quick and easy while uploading was simple and fast. The device's user interface is clean. Some electronic images of handwriting were not that clear but were generally readable.

All-in-one machines for the office may not be the ones for all
Article Abstract:
The latest generation of multifunction printers are being marketed as adequate to handle printing, faxing copying and scanning, and they can be bought for less than $500. In fact, they perform well. For example, the Canon MultiPASS 3000, the HP OfficeJet 570 and the Xerox 450c are good products, and they can be purchased for as little as $350. Setting one of these machines up is not much more difficult than setting up an ordinary printer, typically requiring about 20 minutes time. Essentially, these devices are color ink-jet printers, and therein is their biggest compromise. They provide color at an affordable price, but black-and-white outputs are noticeably less crisp than a laser printer.
