As the Net turns 30, the sequel is still in previews
Article Abstract:
The Internet2 is a high-speed high-bandwith data network subscribed to by 161 universities and other institutions, and 20 corporate research departments. A given location pays $500,000 to $1 million a year to connect. Set up as a successor to the present Internet, it both hearkens back to the 'good old' Internet days, when few were online, and serves as a place for researchers to develop new uses for high speed data communications. Much of this has taken the form of the transmission of image data, which is bandwidth intensive. The network operates at a speed of at least 10 megabits per second, or about 200 times faster than a 56K modem.
