The regulations associated with the private acquisition of Australian state utilities will become much more stringent due to accidents in Victoria, Auckland, and Syndey. The public expects government supervision over utilities to continue after privatization, but such long-term contracts often make control difficult. Regulation must be able to reflect changes in technology and standards.

Australian and American businesspeople increasingly are purchasing corporate planes as they relieve them from the need to base their travel around the rigid schedules of corporate airlines. Demand for corporate planes is so great in the US that sales of business aircraft totalled $6.2 billion in 1997; sales of jet and single-engine aircraft in the US increased by 45% and 71%, respectively.
