A recent survey by the American Management Assn found that businesses of 500 employees or less are only half as likely to layoff workers in slow times as larger firms. Several small firms are profiled, and the benefits they gain from their no-layoff policy are discussed.

The variation in costs charged by 401(k) plan administrators results in a wide range of costs to employers and employees enrolled in plans. Comparing costs among plans is often difficult, but some rules of thumb in making a comparison are presented.
