Bank industry
Article Abstract:
Bank industry earnings will be affected by several different factors in 1998. The Asian financial crisis will add volatility. Growth will be slowed by domestic competition, a potential increase in charge-offs for commercial loans, and compliance expenses for the year 2000 computer transition. Bank stocks, however, have largely recovered from the initial effect of the Asian crisis.

Bank (Midwest) industry
Article Abstract:
Share prices have risen as banks in the Midwest experienced good yearly earnings, but slower growth is expected. Analysts forecast continued consolidation at high prices, as good economic conditions make loans profitable. Although stocks are at an all-time high, prices will probably continue to rise until 2000-2002.
