Bank industry
Article Abstract:
Earnings results were generally favorable for the US banking industry in the 1st qtr of 1999, but possible monetary tightening by the Federal Reserve Board and other factors may change this. Merger integration, revenue and expense growth, the year 2000 computer problem, and higher interest rates are some of the items that banks must deal with in 1999. Investors need to be selective with these stocks, although several have potential for the next three to five years due to the bank stock pullback in 1999.

Article Abstract:
Earnings have been good for the banking industry in the 1990's, but this is not expected to continue due to rising interest rates and competition in the industry. The banking industry has also matured in the US and non-bank financial service providers and the Internet are challenges that the industry must also face. Investors must be selective when evaluating these stocks and choose those which provide useful services that will generate income.
