Cautious investors are buying up Australian mining stocks, attracted by impressive dividend yields and optimistic economic forecasts. Mining stocks have been decreasing in value due to reduced demand for gold, a fall in the Australian dollar, and the 1997 Asian currency crisis. Investors are predicting that Asia will up exports to improve its economy, and Australia supplies much of Asia's raw materials.
