BellSouth unit and Swatch to introduce wristwatch pager, joint marketing plan
Article Abstract:
BellSouth Corp and Swatch have combined forces and are introducing a new wristwatch pager and a joint marketing plan to penetrate potential markets for the new product. There are already several wristwatch pagers on the market, but the BellSouth and Swatch model is a colorful watch that does not contain any liquid crystal display of telephone numbers. The watch emits different signals that indicate whether the call comes from home, school, office or any other pre-selected source. The expected $200 price tag includes activation on MobilComm's national paging network and six months of service from the company. The paging device will be sold at department stores and wherever Swatch watches are sold. The new product relies more on marketing than on any new technology. Prices for the paging services is still undetermined.

MCI files plan for wireless phone network
Article Abstract:
MCI Communications Corp files a plan with the Federal Communications Commission that would require the commission to authorize three nationwide consortia for wireless pocket-phone services. Many different communications companies could share the expenses of building the new networks, thus hastening the networks' construction. MCI Pres and COO Daniel Akerson says possible partners in such an arrangement might include local phone companies and cable broadcasters. Akerson even foresees the wireless networks replacing conventional telephone service. The portable phones will use less power and operate at a different frequency than the current cellular phones. Analysts are intrigued by MCI's proposal, but say it has a long way to go before being realized.
