Big Stocks' Gains Mask Disparities
Article Abstract:
The publicized gains of the Dow Jones Industrial Average overshadow the real performance of the stock market. The few stocks that contribute to the Dow passing the 10,000 mark are usually part of a narrow sector in which few people are heavily invested. The idea of investment diversification precludes investors from receiving the same gains as those of the index. Small-cap stock funds lost almost 6% of their value in 1st qtr 1999 even though their valuations are better than those of large-cap stocks. Science and technology companies enjoy the best stock rises currently.
