Big local phone companies' earnings for 3rd quarter expected to be higher
Article Abstract:
Analysts predict that the major local telephone companies will post good earnings in the 3rd qtr, but not as high as earnings increases that they announced for their 2nd qtr. The local Bell companies and GTE Corp are expected to report a four to five percent increase in profit. Southwestern Bell Corp has been performing particularly well, largely because of its share in Telefonos de Mexico. BellSouth Corp is struggling because of various factors, including the effects of Hurricane Andrew in Florida and Louisiana. However, Hurricane Iniki is not expected to effect GTE, which will report access line increases of 3.3 percent. Ameritech Corp is expected to report earnings of $1.22 per share; Bell Atlantic, 80 cents per share; Nynex Corp, $1.58 per share; Pacific Telesis Group, 73 cents per share; and U S West, 71 cents per share.
