A new route for General Motors: the world's largest company prepares to re-invent itself

General Motors Corp. plans various changes to improve the company's performance. Recently, company executives announced that it would turn its parts subsidiary into a separate company in 1999. The next day GM announced that it would combine the marketing staffs of Oldsmobile, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and Pontiac-GMC divisions, leaving only Saturn to remain independent. The company also plans to build new factories that will require fewer workers to bolt together large pieces of vehicles built by outside suppliers.

GM reportedly to combine US and foreign operations
Article Abstract:
The domestic and international automotive operations of General Motors Corporation will be combined under a proposed organizational shake-up. Industry analysts have reported that GM's foreign operations, which are currently directed like an independent firm, have been beset by management turmoil while its North American operations have been relatively free of management struggles. North American operations president G. Richard Wagoner Jr. is expected to head the combined automotive operations.
