Budgeting for multiple objectives
Article Abstract:
Today's complex business environment calls for a planning process that is interdisciplinary and involves cross-functional teamwork. This multiple-objective planning approach requires managers to strike a balance among the differing agendas of corporate management, financial management, product marketing and sales. One way of reconciling conflicting objectives is through the use of a decision-support system. Such a system can help management conceptualize complicated planning and budgeting problems in terms of targets and objectives so that managers are not overwhelmed by detailed operating decisions required to execute alternative plans. The decision-support system can narrow down alternative plans to enable decision makers to select the best course of action.

Making government 'profitable.' (efficiency of government services)
Article Abstract:
Government agencies can adopt private sector financial performance evaluation methods to help improve the efficiency of governmental service operations. This conclusion was reached after the examination of cost management practices used in the logistics operations of 22 private sector firms revealed key cost management principles that could be applied to the operations of one representative government agency, the Defense Logistics Agency. The cost management principles identified include the need to distinguish total service delivery costs, the need to view costs from an operational perspective, and the need to use financial performance measures that link output to total costs.
