In Australia, consumer retail spending is robust and business investing is flat, but both have contributed to relatively strong job growth year to June 1999. Retail spending is up 5.4% nationwide but is well above 8% in Victoria. Year to March 1999 nationwide business investment is flat at 0.0%, though Queensland and Western Australia are well above and below that mark, respectively. Nationwide job growth increased by 1.8%, while South Australia led regional job growth.

Article Abstract:
Eight Australian mineral prices are expected to rise by more than 10% by second-half 2000, while only oil and cobalt will fall, according to an Access Economics survey of mineral price forecasters. Metal prices, except iron ore and coal, are expected to rise in 1999-2001. Forecasters also expect the Australian dollar, in response to commodity prices, to rise to more than US70 cents in 2001.
