The cable television broadcasting industry has begun to change its mode of operation in terms of cost saving, customer service and other areas in order to improve company balance sheets. Improved compression technology, carriage fees, and growth in advertising revenue are giving the industry brighter prospects, but 1997 losses were reported by most companies. Investors must be selective in their exposure to the industry, or avoid it altogether.
