Carnival's cruise line pleads guilty to oil pollution
Article Abstract:
Holland America Line,a Carnival Corporation cruise line, has pleaded guilty in a U.S. district court to dumping oil off the coast of Alaska. Untreated bilge water, containing refuse, fuel and oil was passed out of the ship without having been filtered, due to a malfunction in the ship's equipment. The cruise line notes its recycling program and its donations to environmental groups. The plea of guilty is inspired in part by a Justice Department probe of the cruise industry.
