Censorship fights heat up on academic networks
Article Abstract:
University-oriented computer bulletin boards have become controversial because of issues that involve freedom of speech. For example, Richard DePew, a professor of microbiology and immunology at the Northeastern Ohio University College of Medicine, was offended by an online reference to the Challenger space shuttle disaster. Consequently, DePew wrote a program called ARMM (automated retroactive minimal moderator), which automatically erases anonymous messages. When DePew activated his program, other Internet network users responded with vigorous online protests. A controversy at Canadian universities involves explicit electronic discussions of unusual or controversial sex practices. In the United States, officials at Santa Rosa Junior College in California have suspended a journalism teacher named Roger Karraker pending an investigation of charges that sexual harassment took place via a bulletin board operated by Karraker.

Laptop managers hit turbulence in skies
Article Abstract:
The International Air Transport Assn advises member airlines to ban the use of electronic devices by passengers during takeoffs and landings. Some airlines are calling for an all-out ban on use of the devices by passengers. Laptop-computer users who do much of their work in the skies could be hard-hit by such a ban. A 1988 Federal Aviation Administration report concluded that the risk of electronic devices interfering with avionics equipment was too remote to bother with. But since that time, portable electronic devices have grown in popularity, more airplane parts have been made of lightweight materials that do not block interference well, and avionics equipment has become more sensitive. Some business people carefully schedule their time aloft for maximum productivity.
