Changing authority patterns: a cultural perspective
Article Abstract:
The concept of the loss of authority as presented in management research is examined using both longitudinal and descriptive studies to discuss the loss to organizations and executives charged with managing them effectively. The perspective provided by a model of cultural change as a process of loss and substitution is used to contrast the loss of authority by managers in organizations as it is described here. The perspective presented indicates that future research must focus on new patterns of authority and concepts of goal cultures, considering the nature of authority patterns in situations, the modification of innovations to fit organizational cultures, and whether a pattern of adaptation to altered authority structures exists.

Loosely coupled systems: a reconceptualization
Article Abstract:
Diverse applications of the concept of loose coupling are embodied in five recurring voices that focus separately on causation, typology, effects, compensations, and outcomes. Each has a tendency to drift away from a dialectical interpretation of loose coupling, toward a unidimensional interpretation of loose coupling, thereby weakening the explanatory value of the concept. The authors first use the five voices to review the loose coupling literature and then to suggest more precise and more productive uses of the concept. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

A review and reconceptualization of organizational commitment
Article Abstract:
It is claimed here that current global conceptions of organizational commitment appear deficient, and that a multiple commitments approach may be more exact and purposeful. This claim is made possible by a review of macro approaches to the foundations of organization and research on reference groups and role theory. Employees may experience a number of different commitments to multiple group goals and values, with implications of this concept discussed.
