Organisational transformation and top-down change: the case of the NHS
Article Abstract:
The National Health Service in Britain has undergone substantial changes in recent years and now represents a mixture of both old and new management techniques. The changes have penetrated all aspects of the organisation, despite doubts to the contrary. The professional attitudes and obvious cooperation have helped the process of change. Some unexpected results have occurred because of the huge size and complex nature of the management exercise.

An overview is presented on public service managerial research during the past decade. The authors advocate strengthening a comparative and international focus in performing future research, as well as examining public service management within political and policy contexts.
