Chechnya clashes mar vote

Rebel forces led by Dzhokhar Dudayev seized strategic sites in Chechyna's second largest city Gudermes on Dec 14, 1995. The seizures were a protest against local elections that Russia had called to give legitimacy to Doku Zavgayev's rule. The fighting lasted from Dec 14-18, 1995.

Chechnya bombardment renewed
Article Abstract:
Russian forces attacked Grozny and four other cities in Chechnya from Jan 24-26, 1995, capturing most of the northern section of Grozny. Rebel forces led by Chechnya Pres Dzhokhar Dudayev retained control of most of the southern section of the city.

Chechen president abandons Grozny
Article Abstract:
Dudayev, leader of rebel Chechen forces, withdrew from Grozny on Feb 8, 1995, to an undisclosed location in the city's suburbs. Russian troops, which began their assault on Grozny on Dec 31, 1994, now control what is left of the bombed-out city.
