Chemical (basic) industry
Article Abstract:
Chemical industry share earnings fell in the 3rd qtr of 1998, and were also expected to fall further in the 4th qtr of the year due to higher capacity and lower demand. Moderate US economic growth in 1999, declining demand in Asia for chemicals, as well as the good product supply and capacity are expected to put pressure on industry prices and profits during the year. There are several good stocks for long-term investors in this industry even with the low earnings prospects for 1999., however.

Chemical (basic) industry
Article Abstract:
Pricing for the basic chemical industry is expected to become more difficult in the last three quarters of 1998, especially due to the inceased capacity for polyethylene through the year 2000 by 5%. Profit margins are not likely to be helped by lower costs as demand for many products will be curtailed by the Asian financial crisis and other factors. However, many of these stocks provide good value for investors through the years 2001-2003.
