China has made a great leap forward since Chou En-Lai
Article Abstract:
China celebrated the 100th anniversary of Chou En-Lai, the country's first premier. Chou, the architect of the Chinese state, is unique among the original Communist revolutionaries in that he is still seen as a paragon of virtue. Chou, who reigned under the mercurial Party Chairman Mao Zedong, particularly is revered for his personal integrity, hard work and high moral standards. Mao's reputation, in contrast, has suffered; Mao is now seen as a political giant who committed egregious sins against the Chinese people. Ironically, Chou primarily was loyal to Mao and was his right hand man during the debacles of the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution, which shows he had a great capacity for evil. Chou bears a great deal of responsibility for the death of 10 million people in 1960 by famine while China exported one million metric tons of grain.

Letting workers organize will solve dilemma for China
Article Abstract:
The Chinese government is faced with a conundrum: it knows it must restructure state-owned business, but the restructuring may undermine political stability as any restructuring will require massive layoffs. Labor unrest is increasing in China, and the government may allow workers to organize into labor unions. Labor unions would fulfill two purposes: giving the government a partner to negotiate labor disputes and giving workers a forum to develop into free citizens.
