The article integrates political and economic perspectives of China's re-emergence in research and development, ranging from the 1978 reforms through its rapid industrialization during the 1980s. Discussion includes observations regarding China's capabilities for the near future and identifies some challenges.

R&D in China: an empirical study of Taiwanese IT companies

The article examines 56 major information technology firms in Taiwan that conduct research and development in China. The key motive is human capital augmentation, particularly obtaining access to cost effective and capable engineers. Other findings include operational patterns.
