Wendt, head of GE Capital, to step down; despite success, unit's CEO had stormy relationship with chairman of parent
Article Abstract:
The sometimes volatile and head-strong chairman and CEO of GE Capital, Gary C. Wendt, has resigned his position as of the end of the year 1998. He has not been in the running to move into GE's chairman spot in two years when John F. Welch Jr. retires. Nor is his successor, Dennis Dammerman, thought to be in the running. Wendt and Welch have not had the smoothest relationship; there has been friction in spite of Wendt's success making GE Capital into a powerful financial services company.
