Compaq, Dell and Hewlett-Packard gain market share while others lose ground

Compaq, Dell Computer and HP boosted their collective market share by more than a third in the 3rd qtr 1997. Each PC manufacturer raised unit shipments by more than 50%, according to surveys by International Data (IDC) and Dataquest. All three companies accounted for 26.2% of total shipments during that span, compared to 19.6% in 1996, IDC said. The industry improved by 16% in the 3rd qtr 1997, but large sellers IBM and Packard Bell each lost market share. Shipments from industry leader Compaq leaped by 56% and 52% respectively, according to Dataquest and IDC. IBM shipments, meanwhile, grew just 10% and 11% respectively. Packard Bell dropped 7.6% and 2% respectively, according to Dataquest and IDC. Dell surged 53% and 60.4% respectively, according to IDC and Dataquest, while HP jumped 62% and 67.9%. Compaq drew praise from investors for flooding the market with sub-$1,000 PCs, which IBM failed to match.

Price war puts powerful PCs closer to home

Consumers and Intel will benefit from the latest round of PC price wars sparked by HP's aggressive move into the home PC market. The home PC market is expected to grow by 27% to 6.1 million machines in 1995. Home PC and software sales topped the sales for TVs for the first time in 1994. HP initiated the latest round of price cuts by introducing a 60MHz Pentium-based machine that will sell for $1,700, or $1,900 with a monitor. The new HP computer will be about $100 more than low-cost producer Packard-Bell. HP's push into the home PC market will seriously hurt the company's margins, but analysts predict that HP will reach its goal of becoming one of the top three PC vendors by 1997. Industry leader Compaq will introduce its 60MHz Pentium-based Presario computer for $2,198. Compaq's prices are usually higher than low-cost vendors, but it tends to offer more technically advanced machines.

PC shipments in U.S. rebound; key players post gains

Personal computer shipments for 3rd qtr 1995 were up 21% over the same period a year earlier, thanks to improved supply. Record PC demand levels in 1995 created product shortages that limited 2nd qtr 1995 year-over-year gain to only 15%. In 3rd qtr 1995 PC shipments, Apple Computer gained 25% over the same period a year earlier, ending a nine-month decline in PC market share to regain the top spot among PC vendors. Packard-Bell is expected to leapfrog Apple during the fourth quarter, however, as Windows 95 and new Pentium processors fuel Christmas-season buying activity. Shipments of fifth-ranked vendor HP were up nearly 350% after the introduction of HP products to the home PC market. Year-over-year shipment increases of only 14% are projected for 1st qtr 1996 as a result of near saturation of PC supplies.
