I.B.M. reports mixed results for quarter; profits exceeds forecast, but revenue falls short
Article Abstract:
IBM has reported its second qtr results, which consist of higher than anticipated earnings and lower than anticipated revenue growth. The company's strong mainframe and computer components sales are responsible for its excellent growth during the quarter, ended on Jun 30, 1997. Earnings were up by 7.4%, or $1.46 a share, to $1.4 billion. Earnings in the second qtr of 1996 were $1.3 billion, or $1.26. The high earnings can be attributed to the $1.6 billion in share buybacks as well as the profit-margin which was unexpectedly high. Revenue in hardware remained flat during the quarter, totalling approximately $8.6 billion. The company's services unit grew 24% over the previous year, gaining $3.3 billion in new contracts.
