Compaq's stock skids on profit warning; Shares fall 22% as PC firm blames industry woes; analysts cut forecasts
Article Abstract:
Compaq Computer Corp. revised its earnings outlook for the second quarter downwards, from $685 million to $460 million. The computer maker's shares closed at $22.9375. For the first quarter, Compaq expects revenue of $9.4 billion to bring earnings of $250 million. Chief Executive Eckhard Pfeiffer pointed to thinning industry margins overall and a decline in corporate purchases. Industry analysts say consumers are either buying $500 machines or high-end equipment directly, from suppliers such as Dell Computer. Business buyers seem to be postponing purchases of the latest Pentium 3 machines, or opting for lower priced servers.
