The independent supermarkets have several times requested the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) to protect them against creeping acquisitions, by taking action under section 50 of the Trade Practices Act. This act generally prohibits mergers or acquisitions that would lessen competition and create a monopolizing imperfect imbalance.
