Article Abstract:
The current consensus forecast of financial institutions predicts modest economic growth for the US over the next four quarters covering the period 1996-1997. Economic growth is forecast at an annual rate of 2%. Short-term rates are expected to decline, while long-term rates are forecasted at around 6.7% through the rest of 1996 and early 1997. The National Unemployment Rate is expected at around 5.8%.

The consensus forecasts of financial institutions predict a mediocre economic growth for the US in 1993. The growths in disposable income and consumer spending are expected to remain sluggish. Short-term and long-term interest rates are also seen to increase while inflation will be contained at present levels. Automobile sales are predicted to rise while housing will remain constant.

Issues concerning the short-term forecasts for financial institutions in the United States in 2001 are discussed. It is emphasized that consumer spending amd interest rates is likely to decrease in keeping with the general economic slow-down.
