Organizational consultant: creating a useable theory for organizational design
Article Abstract:
Partial positive contingency propositions in organizational theory are integrated in an effort to develop a normative science of organizational design in the form of an expert system. Three hundred and fifty conditional imperatives are synthesized based on four criteria: contingency fit, design parameter fit, situation fit and total parameter fit. The result is the Organizational Consultant, a knowledge base expert system that gathers data on the environment, strategy, ownership, technology, size and management styles. It then uses these data to determine the most appropriate organizational design structure and properties, such as centralization, complexity, span of control and formalization. The Organizational Consultant is found to work well for all types of organizations, whether they be in the service or manufacturing industry, or have high or low labor intensity.

A theoretical study of organizational performance under information distortion
Article Abstract:
The impact of information distortion, organizational design and task environment on organizational performance is investigated. A formal information-based network model of organizational performance is used to determine the effects of such factors. Results show that training improves performance, the more the number of distortions the lower performance, turnover degrades performance, teams outperform hierarchies and misinformation leads to lower performance compared to communication breakdowns. Results also reveal that the relationship between information distortion, organizational design and task environment may be so robust that various designs are most cost effective for different combinations of environment and distortion.
