Bull's Zenith to buy 19.9% of Packard Bell
Article Abstract:
France's Cie des Machines Bull will buy a 19.9 percent stake of Packard Bell Electronics Inc. Under the pact, the Bull subsidiary, Zenith Data, and Packard Bell will jointly develop and manufacture microcomputers. Zenith Data will supply Packard Bell with private-label versions of its notebook and subnotebook computers. The alliance will enable Bull to be better positioned in the mass merchandising market, in which Packard Bell is a pioneer. Packard Bell stands to gain more cash and better products from the alliance, particularly in the notebook computer arena. Packard Bell failed at a public offering attempt in 1992, but expects its new alliance to enhance its position should the company wish to attempt another offering in the future.
