Total quality management processes helped British Steel Llanwern works to improve production efficiencies. The processes relied on employee input to identify slow-downs and faults, and the length of time these delayed production. As a result, an operations procedure was targeted and was replaced by a new system that increased throughput, enhancing business performance.

Although significant cost savings can be achieved, these may result not from improved operations and management practices but from innovation and staff reductions. Organizations should target and evaluate potential internal improvements before deciding to outsource.
