Data General to unveil fast Unix computer
Article Abstract:
Data General plans to announce the availability on Mar 13 of a very fast Unix-based computer that can serve as the center of a network consisting of up to 500 users. The new addition to its Aviion workstation product line is expected to cost around $180,000, and to utilize four of Motorola Inc's 88000 microprocessors linked together. It is expected to operate at about 100 million instructions per second, which would make it twice as fast as Data General's fastest existing Unix computer. Analysts believe that even with the speed factor, Data General will still find it difficult to make an impact on the market with the new machine. In the Unix computer world, speed alone is surpassed so quickly by other manufacturers that it ceases to be a serious marketing tool. In the next month HP is expected to announce a reduced-instruction-set computer running at twice the speed of the Motorola 88000. The result would be a one-processor machine half as fast as Data General's but at only one-sixth the price.

Digital unveils new workstations, cuts some prices
Article Abstract:
Digital Equipment Corp (DEC) introduces a workstation line, the DECstation 5000, which will have a base price of $14,995. The product will run at 24 million instructions per second (MIPS), which is somewhat slower than IBM's RISC System/6000. DEC's 5000 will come in four models, with varying graphics capabilities. The top color model will cost $51,100. In Jun 1990, DEC will introduce two models of the reduced instruction-set computing (RISC) multiuser 5800 family. In apparent connection with the 5000's introduction, prices will be cut 25 percent to 40 percent on some older DECstation and DECsystem products.

Digital Equipment Corp. to introduce new line of workstations tomorrow
Article Abstract:
Digital Equipment Corp (DEC) will introduce workstation products on Tue, Apr 3, 1990. The new products reportedly will not be faster than IBM's RISC System/6000s, but a DEC spokesman says DEC's workstations will have better graphics and will be small enough to fit on a desktop. DEC's workstations will use Mips Computer Systems Inc's R-3000 microprocessor, performing at up to 24 million instructions per second (MIPS). Analysts expect DEC's price to be less than $20,000.
