Decision making for project managers: when to involve others
Article Abstract:
Project managers may need to enlist the participation of staff members and others to ensure commitment to decisions and processes, but are also faced with some situations in which critical decisions must be made alone. Article presents a decision tree to assist managers in deciding the appropriate amount of participation through responses to a series of questions. Four decision styles are described, ranging from solo decision-making to delegation of responsibility for the decision to one or more others. Key to the choice of decision style are the critical nature of the decision in question and the need for acceptance by others for implementation of the decision. Aspects of participative management or empowerment are examined.

Partnering: guidelines for win-win project management
Article Abstract:
Partnering in construction project management is beneficial because it fosters joint goal achievement and reduces the possibility of an adversarial relationship between contractor and owner. Partnering is most effective when begun early, often before the contract is granted, and total commitment from management is essential. The process involves creating a team from both groups, including a team leader and facilitators. Seminars are held for team integration and goal setting. Maintenance of the team concept with occasional reinforcement will enhance the effectiveness of this technique.

Using performance goals to motivate workers: a practical guide for project managers
Article Abstract:
Project managers who want to motivate workers whose wages cannot be altered on a performance basis can use performance goals. Three key issues that should be considered by managers planning to use goal setting as a motivational tool are goal difficulty, goal commitment techniques and assignment of goal setting authority. A 10-step performance goal program is suggested.
