Demystifying computer viruses
Article Abstract:
Computer viruses infect host systems and enable programs to replicate without the users' permission. They often cause damage that are costly to repair. The three common types of viruses are the boot sector virus, which alters the boot sector or tables; the program or parasitic virus, which takes root in programs of object files with extensions of EXE, BAT, BIN, COM, OVL, SYS and DRV; and the multivariate virus, which is a combination of the boot sector and the program file viruses. Although only about 5% of all computer viruses are deemed to be malignant, companies should still try to eliminate benign viruses because they waste corporate resources. The best way to fight against viruses is to adopt multiple lines of defense, which should include education, policies and anti-virus tools.
