Developing classification structure of organizational problems: an empirical investigation
Article Abstract:
Many conceptual frameworks have been proposed that identify categories of organizational problems, but none have been empirically developed. In response, this study elicited examples of problems from practicing executives and produced a problem structure identifying common problem categories and their interrelationships. The structure provided a means to examine eight conceptual problem frameworks, and that process revealed some support for two. Compared to extant frameworks, the empirical structure offers greater refinement and an expanded delineation of problem categories as well as revealing some interesting patterns in their interrelationships. Solution diversity and the quality of group decisions
Article Abstract:
A study of 98 ad hoc groups comprised of 594 students sought to verify the link between the promotion of solution diversity and the quality of group decisions. Findings supported this long-favored group management technique, although the quality of individual solutions was found to be higher than that of group decisions, which weakened the primary conclusion somewhat. It was also noted that diversity could lead to interpersonal conflicts within the group, which could effectively eliminate solution development.

Information processing and problem solving: the migration of problems through formal positions and networks of ties
Article Abstract:
A study of the flow of information about organizational problems was conducted. We found that managers often avoided passing problems to formally designated problem solvers and used personal ties to forward information to problem solvers. The strength of ties between individuals had a weak effect on passing problems across professional boundaries. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)
