Differences over privacy on the Internet; U.S. and Europe at odds on how to protect users
Article Abstract:
The US and European nations are disagreeing over Internet consumer privacy, which could delay the international development of electronic commerce. A European Union committee in Jun 1998 reported that two proposed standards, Microsoft's Privacy Preferences Project (P3P) and Netscape's Open Profiling Standard (OPS), fail to meet the Oct 1998 European Privacy Directive's policy of requiring corporations to obtain individuals's consent before gathering personal demographic or marketing data. By comparison, the Clinton Administration advocates less stringent self-regulation within the electronic commerce industries. P3P and OPS are under consideration from the World Wide Web Consortium, an Internet standards group, for international implementation. Both Web browser-based technologies aim to let individual computer users control the release of personal information to Web sites.
