Internic is caught in the crossfire in a battle over Internet site names
Article Abstract:
Internic administers Internet domain names, and increasing commercialization of the Internet has put the organization at the center of a bevy of trademark disputes. Many computer industry pundits, including Internet officials, hope Congress will indemnify Internic in trademark disputes over Internet domain names, which could then be settled directly between primary parties using existing trademark law. Currently, Internic requires registrants to sign a liability waiver specifying that a bond be posted to cover Internic's legal expenses in case of any legal dispute. Internic currently mediates domain name disputes itself, using a policy weighted in favor of trademark holders. A rash of opportunistic domain-name speculation led the company to adopt its pro-trademark holder policy. Internic is operated by Network Solutions, which in turn is owned by Science Applications International.

The World Wide Web's phenomenal popularity has inspired a number of software companies to develop sophisticated Web authoring software. The Web's primary language, HTML, is quickly becoming obsolete as authors strive for more sophisticated multimedia presentations than HTML can handle. Some Web platforms are powerful but hard to use. Sun's Java, for example, must be used by a programmer familiar with C++ and object-oriented programming. Sybase has made efforts to develop an easy-to-use Web authoring environment with its Media Splash and Media Play products. These products will ship Feb 20, 1996, for between $40 and $250 and are intended to empower non-technical users to create multimedia Web content. Many believe that the success of the World Wide Web was originally predicated on HTML's ease of use, and its ongoing popularity may depend on keeping Web content easy to produce.
