Digital's new line of workstations may set the pace
Article Abstract:
DEC is slated to debut what analysts are calling the world's fastest workstations. Based on the new Alpha AXP processor, the new workstations will sell for $4,995 to $69,995. DEC is currently third in the workstation market with an 11.1 percent market share, behind leader Sun Microsystems Inc, with a 38 percent share, and HP, with a 17.4 percent market share. Analysts say inertia favors Sun, even though the technology in its product line is lagging. In 1992, Sun, HP and fourth-place IBM, with a fast-rising 7 percent market share, gained at the expense of DEC. Analysts caution that in the fast-changing workstation market, DEC's new machines could be surpassed by other vendors' new products in a matter of months.

Digital Equipment to unveil new line of Micro VAX machines to counter IBM
Article Abstract:
DEC's new line of minicomputers, called the DEC VAX 4000 line, delivers more power than IBM's top-of-the-line IBM AS/400 minicomputers at less than half the cost. The new microcomputer, which will range in price from $60,910 to $329,000, is aggressively priced to compete with IBM. It is designed for client-server computing, in which one or more computers act as servers or hubs for networks of smaller desktop machines. The DEC VAX 4000 uses several processors, nearly as powerful as the central processor, which are dedicated to speeding up data traffic on the network and allowing especially fast access to disk-storage devices.
