Down country roads, come modern phones; even tiniest Bells get fiber optics and put an end to old party lines
Article Abstract:
Pinnacles Telephone helps rural central California residents maintain their lifestyle and use communications to get their products to market. Pinnacles, the smallest of 11 privately-owned state companies, serves 185 subscribers in a 200-sq-mi area. Only 95 independent US telephone companies reach less than 500 customers. Time-conscious farmers rely heavily on technology to obtain crop reports over the Internet or fax stock projections to commodities traders. Rex Bryan, who founded the company in 1953 with a single 'farmer' line that reached 30 ranchers, invests heavily in equipment to keep pace. Pinnacles' shift from party lines to private lines accelerated with the introduction of fiber optic cables in 1991. Pinnacles, with annual of revenue of slightly more than $1 million, receives 13% of its operating revenue from the Universal Service Fund, a $793 million Federal program. Long-distance calls account for some 21% of operating revenue.

Brazil phone stock dives, a proxy for Latin markets
Article Abstract:
Telebras, Brazil's giant telephone company, has seen its share value drop since its privatization on July 30, 1998. On August 19, 1998, Telebras' American depository receipts were valued at $95. This was a drop from $124.625 at the time of the company's privatization. Brazil had sold its share in Telebras for nearly $19 million. This was approximately 70% higher than the asking price. Telebras is a reflection of a wider concern about emerging markets.
