EU regulators urge denial of airline alliance program
Article Abstract:
European regulators urged that two proposed global airline alliances be denied unless significant changes to the proposals are first met in which the alliances allow other competing airlines to join, and in which the airlines must have to give up certain routes to rivals. Although the Star Alliance contains Air Canada, Thai Airways International and Brazil's Varig, the EU was primarily concerned with the European airlines who are proposed alliance members, such as Germany's Lufthansa, UAL Corp.'s United Airline and SAS. The EU also addresses the proposed merger between British Airways and AMR Corp.'s American Airlines.
