Higher natural gas prices and a shortage of capacity caused electric power rates in the Western US to increase beginning in May 2000. Deregulation and politics are also having an effect on the industry. Investors need to be selective, as some of these stocks have declined in value in 2001.

The power crisis in California is not yet over late in the year 2001, although prices have declined since earlier in the year. Yields in this industry are still above market levels after the terrorist attacks of Sep 11, 2001. Many of these stocks are suitable for income and stability.
