Electric utility (west) industry
Article Abstract:
Electric utilities in California will become more competitive in 1998, with the passage in Sep 1996 of legislation restructuring the industry. Electric rate capping and fuel cost protection are provided for, but provision for the issuance of revenue bonds is the most important item. Other states are expected to follow California's example in this concept. Investors should look elsewhere, as valuations for these stocks are not attractive in 1996.

Electric utility (east) industry
Article Abstract:
Electric companies in the eastern US are seeking merger possibilities due to the drop in natural gas prices which has lowered the value of natural gas companies. These mergers provide utilities with a large customer base and an increased ability to offer nonregulated energy. Due to deregulation, the newly merged companies are aiming at the US market or specific regional markets. As a whole, electric utility stocks are untimely.
