Electric utility (west) industry
Article Abstract:
The attitudes and actions of various state regulatory agencies will have a major affect on the economic future of electric utilities as they move into the competitive marketplace. Investors should take note of the upgradings and downgradings of various electric utilities in different states that have resulted from regulatory decisions. Because of regulation reform and the volatility of interest rates, there are many individual electric utility stocks that offer higher than usual yields which should interest risk-taking investors.

Electric utility (west) industry
Article Abstract:
Electric utility consolidation is accelerating with six mergers announced for 1995. Rate competition and cost reduction needs from deregulation are the major factors. The Interstate Power, IES Industries, WPL Holdings merger is unusual, however, as is the proposed merger of Puget Sound Power and Light with Washington Energy. High share prices, increased competition, and slow dividend growth make these stocks unattractive investments.
