Accounting education: does more mean better?
Article Abstract:
Universities need to review the design of their accounting education programs to ensure that they meet the changing demands of the accounting profession. Developments that have made a review of the structure and content of accounting courses imperative include the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants' requirement of 150 semester-hours of accounting education and the Accounting Education Change Commission's recommendations that courses oriented toward preparing students for professional exams be discouraged. Changing employment conditions have also brought into focus the need to review accounting education objectives. As a result of the rise in the demand for paraprofessionals and other support staff members and the tight job market for accounting professionals, many accounting graduates are ill-trained and poorly prepared for the positions available on the job market.

How the new tax law affects business
Article Abstract:
The new tax law, with its lower rates, encourages business and personal decisions to be made on the basis of economic, rather than tax, considerations. This will promote wiser spending of money, thus creating more wealth and employment. Since the law does not become effective until mid-1987, the 1987 rates are blended. The new law discourages doing business in the corporate form. Companies may find it more profitable to do business as a Subchapter S corporation or as proprietorships or partnerships. Major changes in the law involve changes in investment tax credit, depreciation, travel and entertainment, corporate minimum tax, dividend received exclusion, bad debt reserve method, foreign taxes, and targeted jobs credit.
