Enriching the corporate ethics environment
Article Abstract:
Companies that implement ethics policies and compliance enforcement programs may or may not achieve their economic goals, but those that do will enable top management to work with employees in environments of trust and confidence. Such environments ensure companies are focused on economic objectives. The guidelines for companies interested in implementing or improving ethics policies include determining if a corporate environment is receptive to such a policy; convincing participants the effort is necessary; and involving all the critical parts of a company in the entire effort. A policy should be expressed in broad statements, not as a list of specific infractions. A policy should also include information that tells employees what disciplinary consequences will result from not complying. The areas a policy should address include competence, confidentiality, and integrity.
