The tech wreck, terrorism and war, the global economic downturn, globalization and anti-globalization, corporate collapses and the ensuing focus on corporate governance were responsible to end the bull market. The performance of the global equity markets in 2001 and 2002 was disappointing but the advantage for Australia was that they did not fare quite as badly as the North American and European counterparts.

The United States Federal Reserve and the financial markets have eased interest rates by 25 basis points to 1% on June 26, as one of the last attempts to stimulate growth by traditional monetary policy actions. The risk of deflation is high because of the renewed terrorist incidents in the US, which would adversely affect corporate and consumer confidence.
