Equities should benefit from a flight to stability
Article Abstract:
Australian equities are expected to benefit from the Asian recession, which began in 1997. Fund managers will move to the Australian market, further influenced by the perception that the U.S. market is overbought. Although some of Australia's largest companies are dependent on Asia, the reflex selling response will provide improved buying opportunities. Lower Asian currencies will not harm casinos, as the truly wealthy sector has not been affected.

Falling dollar stirs fears of trouble ahead
Article Abstract:
The Australian dollar is continually declining and economists are waiting to see how the Reserve Bank (RBA) will react. Furthermore, several of Australia's largest trading partners are in recession, and a weakened domestic demand may result in the local economy weakening as well. If the Australian dollar falls below US60 cents, the inflationary effects of higher import prices could pressure RBA to react.
