Executive information systems: not just for executives anymore!
Article Abstract:
The application of executive information systems (EIS) is now expanding. Designed exclusively for senior executives, these instruments are now increasingly being used by employees for their decision-making tasks. According to a recent study, companies implement EIS to provide timely and faster information access, gather and centralize data from a variety of sources, keep track of organizational performance, provide information on critical success variables and enhance interorganizational communication and senior executive effectiveness. Given that they act as the data collectors for the organization, controllers, treasurers and accounting managers should serve as the main driver behind EIS development, selection and implementation. Their basic experience in transaction processing systems and accounting forms and reports helps in ascertaining the type of accounting information that executives and managers will require.

The wizardry of Lotus Notes
Article Abstract:
Lotus Notes is a workgroup software that allows users to connect with their office regardless of their distance from it. This software can be used to transmit and receive documents and messages, and can act as an electronic bulletin board for an organization. While the data can be entered anywhere, everybody in the company can avail of a current copy. For instance, data sent by a salesperson in an isolated region can be disseminated across the globe and can be read by individuals who need them. Major companies, such as MCI, Coopers & Lybrand and General Motors, have already started using Lotus Notes. IBM was so awed by this product that it acquired the company that developed it, Lotus. The software allows the use of a PC, a Macintosh or a Unix workstation, and the server machines can run in such operating systems as OS/2, Windows, Novell and Unix.
